The world’s most intelligent person is not the world’s richest person such as Mexican telecom mogul Carlos Slim Helú with a net worth of $69 billion, Microsoft founder Bill Gates with a $61 billion fortune, Berkshire Hathaway boss Warren Buffett with a net worth of $44 billion, France’s Bernard Arnault with a wealth of $41 billion or India’s Mukesh Ambani with a net worth of $23 billion. The world’s most intelligent person has been speculated to be Kim Ung Yonga of Korea.
At the age of only four years, Kim Ung Yonga could solve integral calculus problems. Kim Ung Yonga mental scale had an IQ of 210 which he scored at Stanford-Binet test. At 3, Kim Ung Yonga could speak Japanese, Korean, German, and English languages fluently.
Normal Social Skills
Kim Ung Yonga was born on March 8, 1962 to parents who were both professors. Kim attended Colorado StateUniversity where he obtained a Ph.D. in Physics at age 16. Upon return to South Korea, Kim decided to switch from physics to civil engineering where he also obtained a Ph.D in civil engineering.
As a child Kim portrayed normal social skills just like any other average child.
Marilyn vos Savant
And just like any other title, every country would want to have the world’s most intelligent person. Among many others who can be given the title of the world’s most intelligent person is Marilyn vos Savant. Marilyn vos Savant was born August 11, 1946 in USA and is of German and Italian ancestry. Her IQ is very controversial and has varied between 167, 180, 195, 215, and 230.

Another contender for the title is Christopher Michael Langan. Langan was born in 1952 and is reported to be one of the smartest persons in America. I didn't see George W. Bush. And I wonder how the numbers were arrived at for people who lived before I.Q. tests were invented??
George W. Bush has a high IQ? George W. Bush may have an IQ of 115 – one of the lowest IQ of all presidents of past 60 years or so - but it doesn’t matter because IQs are given by God.
So, you base the intelligence of a person on how well they can take a test?! Have you taken some of the MENSA tests? It's all in the timing. You can be a genius one minute and a dunce the next. Mr. Kim Ung Yonga has got the right view... he is laughing at how easily misled people are. Who is the Real Genius? Evaluation of history will show that the people who have gotten credit for major inventions or breakthrough technology were not the original people(person) to come up with the idea or concept. They just happen to be the one(s) who apply it or end up making it known. We have a distorted way of appreciating and honoring the One who is Truly the Creator.
I think we have best IQ score scorable people in many jails.

Interesting hub - thank you. I am a firm believer that you are born with your intelligence (or lack of it). But I have found the more MENSA type tests I practice with before I take an IQ test, the higher my score will be. The true test of someone's intelligence is what they accomplish with their gift.
Interesting facts. But is IQ measured on these standardized tests still equated with intelligence? I think we have moved away from that notion now.

It's a fascinating read! Personally my IQ tests results falter ranging from 112 to 200 plus.You see, if you're applying for a certain high-paying job, HRD personnel still implement this procedure.

I have to agree with those commentators who noted that good ability at IQ test taking is not necessarily the same as intelligence under the pressure of a real life situation, or the best that a person can do when truly engaged by a subject.
Interesting hub. I wonder about the validity of IQ tests. I've tested anywhere between 121 and 147. Also wonder how the Galileo IQ of 165 was derived. A high IQ on the tests doesn't ensure good life skills or financial or commercial success, or happiness, for that matter. Still, interesting...well done, good job, thank you!

This just goes to show that money does not equal intelligence.
My father is also a very successful man. He told me success is about two things: acquiring knowledge and going outside of your safety zone. One point of knowledge is about keeping yourself focused on your task and thinking of ways to get results, not like that other person, just employed who has a break and reads magazines, than having a break whilst still being available and alert. Success is about motivation, not really I.Q. It has to have rewards to keep you focused on the job.
Oops, not safety zone, comfort zone. I heard David Bowie once collapsed onstage from over-exhaustion, and high achieving personalities have a drink from the hard work, but risk into becoming like Bob Dylan or David Bowie, one too many, and another. Quite a different reason from just a drinker. Most successful people I know after work, have a few drinks. If one family member is successful and others aren't, it's not I.Q. because they all have about the same. And some are beneficiaries, some educated with a little money, and some straight into a trade or occupation focusing on the rewards of money and rich

I'm a highly intelligent person but I suffer in the area of maths seeing as I never paid attention in this subject, should this effect my IQ?
My family members who are very highly successful, for e.g. from poverty to a millionaire, then accumulating, in 10 years, leaving a marriage, and giving all away for say mum and the kids,then doing it again, I believe have schizotypical personality disorders. Self-sufficient, express turndowns of wanting anything from you, not needing to form close relationships, at the office, not seeing family, you go to them only, thickskinned, expects you to survive alone, go elsewhere, not near them and work alone. IQ doesn't seem to be a factor in our family. They all say they are not that bright, yet their faces are in magazines with interviewers asking for their comments. Slight change of actually giving to others in old age, but only ridgidly on the right occassion, obsessive-compulsive??? Very insensitive temperaments.And wouldn't care what you said about them in the slightest. Nice personalities? I don't really think so. Full of different personality disorders I think. But high achievement and wealthy. I mean none did very well at school. I think achievement and occupation gives others something to think it's an honour, but I think they've got problems

No it doesn't effect your I.Q. It just means you have not stumbled across it before. My mother was a school teacher before higher professions and I finished school before form 5. I don't know words she knows, languages, literature, or maths. I believe it does effect the IQ tests. I remember asking her the same question and that was the reply she gave me. Also, I will do an IQ test and fall under the average population, where-as when I was at school, I was in all classes among the bright ones, and later seperated from main stream to do extra subjects, and not need help the average person wished. The only reason kids get to be bright at school is because of the strictness in the family home, not the IQ. In class we don't talk, we get to class. We do our homework. Or we get in trouble. More successful families have extremely strict homes to the point that to the average population, it is viewed your parents are mean. I left school and I've fallen on the tests. My father was not bright at all so left and did a trade, where-as my also not bright mother went the academic way. He has at least 6 times over the amount of money she has. In contrast I had some kids who began school with high grades, and I had chosen a father, pretty much the average guy. Not so much strictness, so they loved him more, same as why I chose him. When they decided to live with him instead because mum is mean, their school grades went down. Teachers once acknowledged them as very bright kids who came in the top 10 in NZ for maths and computing, living with me-to- by high school following years living with Dad, unable to pass exams, with teachers not convinced they are bright. None of my family would bother taking the tests. My kids are happy with Dad and I am happy I fought my way out of discipline. And I mean the brighties which is contraversial and the successful people have extremely strict families like you will not believe!!!! Like bed at 7 and if you get up once you are answerable plus talked to and if it happens again, punished. Like it doesn't matter what anyone else does, it's what you did. Their own kids are never sided with. Any turn in the wrong direction and you are yelled and screamed at. So in psychology at children 0-7, the kid learns fear of authority so in the class, the kid listens and learns and does not talk, so they learn day by day by day an accumulation of facts which is building up, so you take school tests for that age group, jump years at school, get put into seperated classes. My mother was called in and advised the school could not cater for me and I needed other materials. She said no. I want my kid to be like everyone else. I left school at form 5 and taking any test at my age of adulthood, my scores honestly are very low now. My mother worked helping kids behind in subjects for years and told me the kids are bright but they have lived overseas where the education is not as good, or the background such as kids not receiving books at home prior to school, or parents not interested in encouraging a child too much in this area for various reasons, or non-attendance. When they fall behind they think they are dumb. I have dated many guys who thought they were dumb at school and laughed at and I don't believe they actually are. It's about lifestyle and personalities. And you can throw something at most kids from a child and they would be genius. But the most important thing for everyone is to accept we are all individually different and love everyone and be our kindest to everyone to counteract our bad days and always stay with our family to be with them because true genius is who we are and how we can be there for everyone who feels just like us with our weaknesses. Be flexible with everyone and do not hate.
So you want to score a high IQ? Lets try for 12 months time. Bed is at 10 everynight. Door doesn't open. At the table by 6am. Chores. Chuck smokes out right now! Answer is no and all drugs and alcohol. Appointment for the Dr. Do as you are told and do not talk back to me. Be at work on time. There is no such thing as sick. You will only have similar type friends from my authority. After work, you will go to your room and study. Or you will ask in advance to see a friend for it to be okay. If not the kettle cord, police called in with us telling lies, us phoning others to tell and have them angry at you, including cutting off friends due to insolence or any measure or form to make you so frightened, will occur. You have no say. Now isn't this fun, it's a book, it's so exciting to learn. We will have fun over the next 12 months. I want to see 3 hours learning after work. (I need that cigarette!! Pain!) I see you are beginning to get creativity inside you caused by disciplinary hardship. Well done. People wish to see you. You write very well. Don't tell anyone you just wet your pants last week. And don't tell anyone about those marks I gave you. Or you will be punished more. Need the garden done and we clean the house every week. Genius is creativity. Creativity comes from hell. What you get out of life you really put in. You are also probably mentally disordered or close to it in some way. Congradulations, it has been 12 months, you look healthy from bed, food, exercise and your IQ is very high. Wet your pants again and you'll get another slash.
I really think this is interesting from a higher education standpoint. It encourages young adults like myself to further our education. I need to hit the books!
Like money, investing it, and a compatible partner to educate each other with problems. Not books, accountbalance. "It is for the wealthy to have the priviledge to a great education so as to benefit others by passing on the knowledge." Quote, some book. Education is very expensive. A bank account is necessary to live. Company is necessary for happiness. From money then fame. From behaviour then achievement. From feeling blue or bored, love.

This was interesting. My husband is not known outside our circle of friends and family, but my brother refers to him as being "scary smart." My brother says my husband is the most intelligent person he's ever met...and my brother is a pretty smart guy.

When one reaches a certain level of intellegence, that person often wishes they didn't KNOW so much so that they could be like the rest of a population and just fit in!
Just to be happy, be average, be loving.
My dad, (rest his soul) used to refer to my older brother as an "educated idiot!" Now my brother is a teacher for a high school in Houston, Texas. He is just as smart as your average teacher, possibly smarter than some?
My point is this, you can score high on an IQ test with math and other testing means, but fail miserably when it comes to everyday activities that we all face. I'm in sales and it requires me to think on my feet. I would fair pretty well on a typical IQ test, but I'm confident that when up against some of the people on your list I could leave some in the dust when it comes to selling a product.
So the moral of the story is this. IQ tests are great, but having a degree in "street smarts" might be a better award to have hanging on your wall.

I enjoyed this hub. IQ is just a number like age which doesn't define a person. Even people with low IQ may have flashes of brilliance while their high IQ counterparts possibly waste time doing nothing with what they were born with.

I think the fact he's Asian is a little bit sad. Anyone with any knowledge on the world would know at least some English. Most Asian people who migrate to our country have very poor English skills. Perhaps he cheated on his IQ test. I don't care If he thinks he is so much brighter than everyone else in the world, perhaps they should do an MRI scan of his brain to tell if he is actually that brainy. Being Japanese he is likely to eat so much sushi.

I enjoy reading articles like this. I have noticed that many of the more intelligent people in my life always choose a selfish path- myself included. It is a waste that some of the brightest of us choose not to do something for others with our minds. I love hearing about people using their insight and considerations to enlighten others and encourage open minds. Which all of us do just by interaction, but I like seeing it happen with a core of desire for helping others.

I also wonder about transcending the knowledge of dark things in the world that comes with intelligence to balance that with a healthy view on things; seeing the bigger picture. I would love if the "most intelligent" men and women in the world wrote a book containing their insights into things I have cemented into my brain, so I could absorb new ideas to combat my sophistry.

Well, I enjoyed the comments as well as the original hub! I do agree that a person's complete intelligence can't be estimated by standardized tests. For example? If I took a test in German (I don't understand German) and suppose I guessed at all the answers. Theoretically, I would get some right, even though I was guessing. I have to agree with some of the other comments that it's not so much who has the highest IQ or what not, but what a person does with their gifts is actually more important. As a side note, I took an IQ test in college and although I don't remember the score, the test administrator told me I was "Average". I was a little upset because I thought I was a genius! Lol! Keep up the good work-you know how to get people to respond! I will follow you on Hub Pages and I hope that you too, will follow me!

But, of course, we are also human - so we should also take into account emotional and intuitive intelligence. Surely, that is important too? Being bright is one thing - being a wonderful, rounded, cultured human being quite another. Are we too obsessed by the 'simplicity' of IQ?
Do you know how they measured these scores back in the Dark Ages (or should I say Middle Ages?)? And even if they actually had compatible tests, how de we know the records have been accurately preserved?

What I've experienced over the years of people who are highly intelligent is that they can find it difficult to cope with the mundane tasks in life (not very streetwise) and often don't have great people skills. Though perhaps this has something to do with the fact they get bored easily! Where would we be without the geniuses of this world. (I dread to think!)
Scoring on an IQ test is measured by the number of correct answers and the amount of time taken to finish the test. The more correct answers in less time equals a higher IQ. Two people take the test and both score 140. One answers 150 questions correctly in 30 minutes while the other answers 250 questions correctly in 48 minutes. Who has more intelligence?

I'm surprised you didn't include Michael Kearney on your list he was the only child in American to attend college at the age of five years old and is considered to have an IQ close to three hundred. I remember seeing him in 60 Minutes about fifteen years ago.

IQ test don't really mean anything, what about autistic children...some people also had an educational advantage and kim younga's parents were so dedicated to educating him that they stayed home to teach him...a child's or adult's education is heavily dependent on the involvement of the parents

Are most smart people asked to take an IQ test someday. I don't even know where I would go to take one.
This was a fun read. It was particularly cool to see the names of famous persons paired with their overall IQ score. I didn't know the George Wasington was such a smarty. And I would have guessed that Einstein's IQ would be even higher. Very good post!
Isaac Newton is without a doubt one of the smartest people who ever lived however once he had done his single great work on Gravity he never reached those heights again.
It is almost as if he was only meant to share that knowledge with us and then to step aside for others.
I've heard many reports about very intelligent people have very little success in the real world. Simple smarts aren't always everything!

IQ scores are highly over-rated, no pun intended. Depends on many circumstances. I have met people with a low IQ rating yet very smart in their field of work and personal lives. For those of you out there who worry about a low IQ. Don't fret about it, you are the person God made you to be, we are all unique and not one of us the same. IQ tests are fun though:0)

IQ scores are highly over-rated, no pun intended. Depends on many circumstances. I have met people with a low IQ rating yet very smart in their field of work and personal lives. For those of you out there who worry about a low IQ. Don't fret about it, you are the person God made you to be, we are all unique and not one of us the same. IQ tests are fun though:0)

Who cares about IQ? Notice that most of the people with extremely high IQs (that have actually been tested to have high IQs not estimated) are people who contribute nearly nothing to physics, mathematics, or engineering.
Probably because IQ tests do not measure creativity and creativity matters much much more for contributing.
Why do people think Einstein would have a high IQ? Obviously he didn't have a high IQ, maybe in the 140s max, he was more of a creative genius than a IQ genius. He made many math errors, failed some college courses, and his wife understood mathematics better.
Newton on other hand dwarfs Einstein in terms of IQ and contributions. Newton's intelligence indicates extremely high IQ levels. He solved highly complex mathematic problems that puzzled the greatest mathematicians of his time in only a few hours.
Certainly in terms of IQ, Creativity, and contributions Newton is the King.

I still think the basic and fundamental skill a person should have is Love for GOD and all his creations. Everything else follows. Look closer, those who are in the ultra rich list are not in anyway a genius theoretically but geniuses in their own right. We all know for a fact that money is the hardest most difficult object to gain but look how these people managed to amass almost half the worlds wealth?
Lesson is, No matter how intelligent one is on books and written text does not guaranty a persons success in "real" life. "streetSmart" is harder to gain than "bookSmart"..I know someone who graduated summa cum laude and was really great in school but 10 years after just an employee(though VP for finance) still an employee and her boss is her subordinate in college, must be worth billion by now.
So, I still firmly believe that a persons intelligence should not be measured alone on what that person can achieve academically but in real life..how a person handles lifes difficulty and turn every failure into success.
Genius is a person's ability to move back up from being under the pits. Genius is common sense which is actually un common at all. Genius is a persons reflexes and speed in thinking of solution in problems arising from real human interaction.

Great hub. Never quite figured out WHY an IQ tests works and how it works. I've taken them and scored well, but of course nowhere near these people. A high IQ is wonderful, but it doesn't always translate to income potential, or more importantly, how their IQ's will ultimately help society or for that matter, the world.

I took an IQ test in high school and got a 126. That's OK I guess. I've lived with it and been satisfied. A few years ago I found an on-line version in German. My native language is English with a less than fluent knowlege of German. Still I took the test. At some point I got bored with the test and quit. Surprisingly the system gave me a score even though the test was incomplete. The score it gave me was 154. What is the significance of a score on an incomplete test?

I think you all are confusing the type of intelligence that IQ test measure with common logic. To be successful in life you need to have common logic. These tests measure the intelligence of people to solve scientific and mathematical problems. And that maybe could not give you personal success but it is for sure fundamental for the evolution of our species.
You cant be a scientific without having a descent IQ. No matter how much common sense you have. They are two different things.

Interesting read. I also have taken MENSA tests and many other tests, and the more tests I took the better I got. I think intelligence should not be measured on the score of one test, but on how quickly you get better at it. In my opinion, a person is intelligent not when HE'S GOOD at something, but when HE CAN BECOME GOOD AT SOMETHING VERY QUICKLY. This is the only way to overcome or limit the bias that comes with experience. Intelligence is not dexterity or knowledge, it's the ability to learn.

Sorry, I don't consider vos Savant or Langan for example to be the smartest. How is spending a life writing articles for the Sunday paper, or farming, demonstrate superior intelligence? I actually have more respect for the IQ test than many as far as predicting/defining raw intelligence. But imo "smartness" can also only be demonstrated by "results". Someone like Newton or Heisenberg or Turing had plenty of results.
Someone like vos Savant, Langan--they haven't applied their supposed genius to actual problems, haven't made any contributions to science, haven't had any of their theories peer-reviewed, because they haven't made any.
If "intelligence" includes even one iota of "effort" or "ability to use it to find new things out", then people like vos Savant and Langan fail the test.
Obviously some, perhaps like Langan, certainly like Sidis and the later Turing, find their social conditions or personal attacks too detrimental and withdraw from society. This is a decent "defense" of their not contributing as much as they possibly could to science/invention.
But someone like vos Savant and Langan? What is their excuse? Obviously, they need absolutely no excuse if they don't care about advancements. If Langan is happier on a farm or vos Savant writing columns, there is no great fault with that. But solely in the cold context of demonstrating great genius, they've fallen short.

A list of intelligent people should include the highly intelligent people. An IQ of 140 is in the 99.8th percentile, which is very high, but that is pathetically low compared to the others on the list. Surely there are more intelligent people who could be on that list?

IQ's between family members can vary as greatly as any other trait. I have 3 siblings one barely in the above average the other two in the well above average group. And myself according to IQ tests a genius. 150-200 on the Stanford(taken 3 separate times at 8, 16, 24). There are also families with identical twins one of which is solidly average and the other is exceptional. you are born with a certain amount of intelligence potential but environment also plays a factor, as well as ones perceptions of events.
