How to Make Free Ringtones – and Download Free Software for Creating Ringtones

Young people are constantly looking for unique ringtones to use in their mobile phones. Trying to make your own free ringtones using online softwares can be very frustrating. They require you to first upload a full song to their system and this takes a lot of upload time which is a cost that you are paying indirectly in your internet connection. And even when you have uploaded the song and you have created your ringtone, you will be surprised that after all that time you have wasted with them, they will ask you at the very last step to pay a few dollars so that they can allow you to download to your phone the ringtone you have created. That is not fair. They will toss from right, left, centre, backward, forward and finally you are told to pay so that you can get your ringtone.

Let’s make one ringtone step by step so that you can follow how it is done. Let’s also assume that you have been watching the Indian movie 3 idiots that is making millions of Indian youth go crazy and that you have liked the music ‘Behti Hawa Sa Tha Woh’ by Shaan and Shantanu Moitra  which is featured in the movie 3 idiots. You now want a portion of the song ‘Behti Hawa Sa Tha Woh’ to be your ringtone. You will download the song (or any other song that may be your favorite) free from the internet and then work on it using your free ringtones making software. Here are the steps to follow.

1. Download and install Audacity 1.2.6 from here which is software for recording and editing sounds. Audacity is free software and carry GNU General Public License
2. Download and install Audacity optional Plug-ins and Libraries called LAME MP3 encoder from here. - This Lame MP3 allows Audacity to export MP3 files Lame MP3 is free software and GNU General Public License.
3. When you are installing the Lame MP3 plug-ins, take note of where in your computer it has been installed – usually C:\Program Files\Lame for Audacity
4. Download your song online. In our case we download the song ‘Behti Hawa Sa Tha Woh’ by Shaan and Shantanu Moitra from here. This step can be avoided if the song you want to use is already on your computer.
5. Create on the desktop a folder which you will rename say ‘How to Make Free Ringtones’. Copy your song that you have downloaded or your song in your computer and paste it on the folder ‘How to Make Free Ringtones’.
6. Launch the free software for creating ringtones, Audacity 1.2.6. Go to file, open, and open your song from the folder ‘‘How to Make Free Ringtones’. You will get a screen that looks as shown in the image below.

7. Open Audacity programme, go to edit, then preferences, then MP3 Export Setup, then Find Library, then Yes, then on go to C:\Program Files\Lame for Audacity and click then select the file named ‘lame_enc.dll’ and then O.K.

8. Click on the waves and drag the cursor to select the portion of the song that you want to be your ringtone. Ideally, the ringtone should be 20 to 30 seconds and you will the scale shown on the screen. You can zoom the screen so that the scale is clear for you to see. Just keep on selecting and playing different portions of the song until you get that unique portion that you have always wanted.

9. Click on the button ‘trim outside selection’ and you will be left with that portion of the song that you liked most.

10. Go to file, then ‘Export Selection as MP3’ and you save it on the folder ‘How to Make Free Ringtones’ with the name say ‘My Free Ringtone’.

The 20-30 seconds ‘My Free Ringtone’ file is your ringtone which you should send to your phone by either using the phone data cable connected to the computer, or through the phone infrared link and that of the computer. If your phone has a Bluetooth link, and it’s activated, then right click on ringtone file on your computer and then select send to Bluetooth that is of your mobile. Alternatively, send that ringtone file as an attachment to an email and then using your phone browser, open the email/attachment and save the music file so opened in your phone. This is your ringtone which you will set your phone to ring/use.

It is that easy. You can share your ringtones with your friends. Just send them emails with that ringtone file and they can open the file and save in their phones.
